Whian Whian
State Conservation Area

Created in 2003 to protect an area surrounded by Nightcap National Park, this new park is home to threatened species such as the spotted tailed quoll, koala and platypus.

Camp or picnic in the rainforest at Rummery Park and enjoy a short walk up Boggy Creek to Minyon Falls within Nightcap National Park. The campsite is being upgraded during the year, so call ahead to check for any disruptions.

Nightcap National Park

The park is located on the southern rim of the caldera of Mount Warning shield volcano. Basalt and rhyolite lava flows from the volcano have influenced the vegetation communities in the area.

Warm temperate rainforest is found throughout the park on soil with a rhyolitic base while sub tropical rainforest is supported by nutrient rich basalt soils. Nightcap National Park has the highest annual rainfall in New South Wales.

The dominant massifs, sheer cliff walls, lush green gullies and spectacular waterfalls wich make up Nightcap National Park are relics of its volcanic past.

The park provides habitat for a number of significant species including the little bent-winged bat, wompoo fruit-dove, masked owl, Stephen's banded snake and red-legged pademelon. Fleay's barred frog and Coxen's fig-parrot have been recorded in the park but not sighted in the wild for some time.

World Heritage

The lush World Heritage rainforest of Nightcap National Park was preserved by a large and determied group of conservationists.

Almost 5000 hectars of Nightcap National Park was given World Heritage status in 1989 when it was added to the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia (CERRA) group.

The Mt Nardi and Protester Falls are easily accessable by car and offer breathtaking views.

The subtropical and warm temperate rainforest communities found in the park have links to the ancient supercontinent of Gondawana. The park is one of 50 reserves in north-east NSW and south-east QLD which make up the CERRA group. All of these reserves contain similar vegetation communities and provide an insight ito the past.
